Slavic mythology and Russian folklore New Russian folklore takes its roots in the pagan beliefs of ancient Slavs which is nowadays still represented in the Russian folklore.
Epic Russian bylinas are also an important part of Slavic mythology. The oldest bylinas of Kievan cycle were actually recorded mostly in the Russian North , especially in Karelia , where most of the Finnish national epic Kalevala was recorded as well. Some Russian poets, including Pyotr Yershov and Leonid Filatov , created a number of well-known poetical interpretations of classical Russian fairy tales, and in some cases, like that of Alexander Pushkin , also created fully original fairy tale poems that became very popular.
Folklorists today consider the s the Soviet Union ‘s golden age of folklore. The struggling new government, which had to focus its efforts on establishing a new administrative system and building up the nation’s backwards economy, could not be bothered with attempting to control literature, so studies of folklore thrived.

A Love Story is the tender and romantic tale of these two supremely talented young people who were thrown together by the Soviet athletic machine and rose through the ranks of figure skating, winning award after award, medal after medal, before winning each other’s hearts and those of the entire world. It’s a lovely tribute from Ekaterina to her husband and the love she holds for Sergei is evident in every word and sentence and paragraph.

Figure skating has a long, sometimes-controversial history as one of the most-watched Olympic sports. Who doesn’t remember the Tonya Harding—Nancy Kerrigan scandal? And the drama continues: Although there’s no official rule that says the skating federation has to base the Olympic team roster solely on the results of Nationals, it’s true that Nationals usually does determine who goes to the Olympics.
USFS has only disregarded this rule a few times in history, a famous example being in , when USFS gave a spot on the Olympic team to Kerrigan over Michelle Kwan who placed second in the National Championships, despite the fact that Kerrigan didn’t compete in Nationals at all that year due to her now-infamous injury. Ice dancing is not without its own fair share of controversy. Ultimately her vote was discarded, and the Russian and Canadian pairs skaters shared the gold medal that year.
But the incident left many people with a bad taste in their mouths about the validity of ice dancing as an Olympic sport. Ice Dancing There are some basic differences between ice dancing and figure skating, though they’re in the same “envelope” of figure skating. The most notable difference is that ice dancing is thought of as ballroom dancing on ice, so the emphasis is on a graceful and entertaining routine that could easily be done on the ground.

They own five men’s golds, 13 in pairs, seven in ice dance, and took the first team event this year.
Sotnikova was in the media area when she was told she won. She ran waving her arms in the air before finding her coach and sharing a warm hug. When she got onto the podium for the flower ceremony, to raucous chants of “Ross-si-ya,” she jumped up and done like, well, a teenager who had just had her Olympic dream come true. And it was a long way for me,” she said. Asada was third in the free skate after finishing 16th in Wednesday’s short program and wound up sixth.
