By Michele Meleen Counselor While each Native American tribe is unique in its death practices, there are some common beliefs about death and the burial process held by many tribes. Since Native Americans do not organize time through structured calendars, their bereavement practices often center on natural elements and seasons. It is important to understand traditional beliefs about death and burial rituals as a way to preserve these cultures and respectfully help Native Americans dealing with death. General Beliefs Depending on how traditional the family is, Indian burials take significantly more time than typical American funerals. These families don’t like to rush the process which can take up to several days to complete. Autopsies are typically frowned upon in most occasions because Native Americans tend to discourage any contact with the deceased’s body.
It’s traditions like bagpipes, kilts, and Claddagh rings that keep Irish eyes smiling during the wedding festivities. Here are a few of the Irish wedding traditions that have made their way over from the old country and into Irish American wedding celebrations. The Claddagh Ring Named after Claddagh, a fishing village in Galway in Western Ireland , the Claddagh ring is handed down from mother to daughter and is used both as the betrothal and wedding ring.
It is worn with the crowns facing inward, toward the wrist, on betrothal, and outward, toward the nail, upon marriage. Today, it is still used as a wedding ring and it is considered improper for a person to buy one for him or herself; it must be given as a gift.

Want to share your dating abroad experience? For us, dating while traveling is a little different than dating at home. Well, at home we are probably a little bit cliche. We dress up, go to a nice dinner and then maybe catch a show or movie. But when on the road, our dates involve more exploration and adventure rather than talking over a meal. The sun was shining and it was a pretty nice day, but it was a bit chilly because it was the middle of winter.
Anyway, we had a lovely afternoon strolling through the town learning a little bit about the history of the area. We decided to make our way down to the beach, making a pit stop to admire the beautiful Peace Palace. When we finally arrived, we were glad to see that the pier was pretty much empty I mean who wants to be at the beach in cold weather?

Behold, The Freakiest Moment In Sesame Street History In the Kreung culture, girls are encouraged to sleep with as many boys as they need to in order to find a husband. None is better than the three lower degrees of Free Masonry; the public is accustomed to it, expects little from it, and therefore takes little notice of it. Next to this, the form of a learned or literary society is best suited to our purpose, and had Free Masonry not existed, this cover would have been employed; and it may be much more than a cover, it may be a powerful engine in our hands.

As they stood amid the brick buildings named after businessmen from Morgan to Bloomberg, black-and-crimson caps and gowns united the graduates into one genderless mass.
What if Harvard Business School gave itself a gender makeover, changing its curriculum, rules and social rituals to foster female success?
Tuthmosis is a Columnist-at-Large at Return of Kings. You can follow him on Twitter. Like it or not, online dating has emerged as a legit player in the dating market in recent years. What was once the repository for the dregs of female creation has become—for better and worse—a go-to dating option for a growing segment of even top-shelf girls. The whole process is really the product of a perfect storm in the American dating market.
Economic realities and cultural shifts have also made going out less appealing. Girls, as I have written elsewhere, have hair-trigger tolerances for awkwardness and discomfort. A growing number of the quality guys—disillusioned by crushing male-to-female ratios, high drink costs, cockblocking, the fatty epidemic, and other night-life realities—have largely checked out of the club-and-bar scene. After dismissing online dating, for years, as little more than a crutch for approach anxiety, a time-suck with little real yield, and dumpster diving, I slowly recognized these forces converging.
Over the course of the past two years, I have spent, literally, thousands of hours pouring over online profiles, unwittingly learning more about online dating and, frankly, the female psyche than I thought possible in that time.

Slovak is mutually intelligible with Czech. Slovak, as a written language, did not exist until the end of the 18th Century, when Anton Bernolak, a Roman Catholic priest set about to create a Slovak literary language. He based his creation on the Western Slovakian dialect and produced a phonetic spelling one that is written as it is pronounced.
Bernolak published his new language in his “Grammatica Slavica” in The language was further developed in , when an agreement on the codification of Slovak as a written language was made. This was led by Ludovit Stur, who now chose the Central dialect as the basis, believing it to be the purest form. History[ edit ] The practices of courtship in Western societies have changed dramatically in recent history. As late as the s, it was considered unorthodox for a young couple to meet without familial supervision in a tightly controlled structure. Compared with the possibilities offered by modern communications technology and the relative freedom of young adults, today’s dating scene is vastly different. Before the s, the primary reason for courting someone was to begin the path to marriage.
It functioned as a way for each party’s family to gauge the social status of the other. This was done in order to ensure a financially and socially compatible marriage. This form of courtship consisted of highly rigid rituals, including parlor visits and limited excursions. These meetings were all strictly surveyed, typically by the woman’s family, in order to protect the reputations of all involved and limit such possibilities as pregnancy. This manner of courtship system was mostly used by the upper and middle classes from the eighteenth century through the Victorian period.
The lower classes typically did not follow this system, focusing more on public meetings. However, the goal of the process was still focused on ending in a marriage. The date, which had previously been the public courting method for the lower class, was adopted by young adults across the upper and middle classes. Meetings between lovers began to be more distant from rigid parental supervision. A young man might take a girl to a drive-in movie rather than spend an evening in the parlor with her family.

The name “Romania,” which was first used when the three regions of the country were united in , reflects the influence of ancient Rome on the nation’s language and culture. The three regions—Walachia, Moldavia, and Transylvania—are relatively culturally uniform. An exception is the Hungarian community in Transylvania, which has its own language and traditions and considers itself Hungarian.
The Roma Gypsies , who are scattered throughout the country, mostly in small camps on the outskirts of towns and cities, are in many ways culturally unassimilated.
Some Indians even go to the extent of dating before marriage. But we won’t talk about them. We understand that marriage is a serious institution and should not be made fun of.
Hindu Rituals for Death and Grief Ceremonies help Hindus confront their grief, interact with it, accept it, and go on. Hinduism, like other great religions, has specific rituals for honoring the deceased and addressing a family’s grief. In most cases, the procedures are conducted almost immediately, within a hour period. When a parent has died and the children live far away, other family members hold the body until the children arrive to do the last rites.
According to Hindu tradition and its sacred texts, only a male family member such as a husband, father or son can perform the last rites. However, in some cases women have taken on this role. In Vedic times, there were incidents of the putrika–a daughter who could assume the role of a son. In later years, the religious patriarchy interpreted the putrika as the grandson, and reserved the conducting of the last rites for males.
In most Hindu families, the body is bathed immediately after death, sometimes by women in the family. The ritual marks of the community, along with sacred ash, may be applied on the person’s body, under the guidance of the priest who chants holy mantras, which vary in different Hindu communities. Before the body is cremated, the immediate family members put flowers on the body, rice in the mouth as nourishment for the departed soul , and coins in the hands.
The body is placed on a bier and taken to the cremation center. With the exception of the bodies of children and sanyasis, bodies are usually cremated.
